NYX, a white widebody Toyota GT86, parked under trees

The NYX build

Bringing my imagination to real life.

I put my trust in my inner whisper. This is how a stock GT86 became one of the most customised 86s in the world.

Chapter 1 of 12

Rivet-and-gap-free bodykit

I admire a clean build, so I decided to blend the wide fenders into the body using fibre-based fillers. At first glance you might mistake it for the factory body — until you notice the fenders are significantly wider than stock. It was a sombre moment to cut into a pristine body, but it was a price worth paying.

The custom-built ducktail spoiler was seamlessly integrated with the boot lid. Trust me — it is incredibly sturdy. Nothing happened to it, even when the car was pushed from the spoiler.

Chapter 2 of 12

Customised taillights

The most customised parametric smart taillights ever designed for an 86 — not a single part was taken from the OEM units.

This pair draws its inspiration from the number 86. Each side has 43 pieces, 86 in total. The top flat sheet, engraved with the NYX pattern, shrinks progressively: each piece measures 86% of the previous one. And the top curve follows an exponential formula, also inspired by 86.

The final product

Thanks to a precise 3D scanner, the taillights fit perfectly into place. The accurate measurements ensured flawless alignment and a clean installation.

LED density is 144 per metre for smooth, seamless animations. Each taillight holds almost 432 LEDs, every one of them individually programmable.

Chapter 4 of 12

Forced induction system

You might ask why I supercharged my 86 instead of turbocharging it. First things first: everything in an 86 is instant. The engine is naturally aspirated from the factory, and you don't want to ruin that with turbo lag.

So I installed the best supercharger on the market — the Vortech V-2 H67B Competition Kit — with ECUTek's Bluetooth map-switching and three custom maps: normal petrol, pop & bang petrol, and C16 race fuel.

Chapter 5 of 12

Carbon fibre bonnet

The unfortunate truth is that the 86's OEM bonnet is marginally lighter than every carbon bonnet in the aftermarket. Still, with help from friends, I replaced it with a Seibon TS-style carbon bonnet — painted after the widebody went on.

Its symmetrical vents cool the engine bay and pull pressure out from under the bonnet. The purpose goes far beyond saving weight.

Chapter 6 of 12

Custom headlights

The most outstanding modification I did myself, from scratch: headlights combining two pairs — Vland aftermarket units for the GT86 and 2018 Lexus RX450h headlights — with customised indicators.

It took serious time and skill: careful cutting, fitting and building supports to hold the new setup, then integrating the headlight electronics with the car's controllers.

Chapter 7 of 12

Wheels & suspension

Upgrading the car and forgetting the wheels? Not possible. NYX rides on 326Power Yabaking rims wrapped in Toyo Tires — the crown-shaped design represents triumph. The rims were fabricated specifically to match the wide-body fenders. It's all about fitment.

HKS comes second on my list of favourite aftermarket brands. HKS Hypermax IV coilovers set a new standard of driving comfort, sharpen the handling, and let me dial in the stance.

Chapter 8 of 12

Trunk-mount GT wing

Battle Aero is known for building some of the best wings and spoilers in the world. Their Force 2 XL GT wing is one of the widest in the aftermarket — chosen because it matched the width of the wide fenders.

I later swapped it for the custom ducktail, but it was fun driving with such an eye-catching wing. Don't be surprised if it comes back.

Chapter 9 of 12

Exhaust system

The exhaust was carefully formulated to get rid of the typical boxer-four drone. Tomei unequal-length headers replaced the OEM headers for that famous rumble, paired with an Invidia Gemini R400 cat-back.

The rumble still wasn't loud enough — not loud enough to annoy the neighbours, just not satisfying. So in went an AVO front pipe with a Tomei over-pipe.

Chapter 10 of 12

Full carbon fibre interior

The console, panels, handles and vents were all wrapped in carbon fibre. The shift knob and handbrake were replaced with some of WeAreLikewise's finest pieces — extra joy every time you touch this beast.

Chapter 11 of 12

Limited-edition steering wheel

One piece I praise from the bottom of my heart: a 1-of-200 Rocket Bunny Racing steering wheel signed by Kei Miura. I picked number 94 in honour of my birth year, on a Gen 2.0 NRG quick release — for that famous ding.

Chapter 12 of 12

Other customised parts

The suede shift and handbrake boots were custom tailored for NYX from the finest suede available. Last but not least, the custom DEZA emblems — designed in Blender and 3D printed — are there to remind you that you are looking at one of the most customised 86s in the world.
